i’m only sleeping

Here’s the song for May 2026. In keeping with this year’s theme of finding older, incomplete songs and finishing them off, this one actually began (perhaps unsurprisingly) as two separate songs: the bluesy intro part which gives it its title, and the grittier rock thing that carries the bulk of the weight.

As much as I was failing to channel Lou Reed here, I also thought about the Stones sympathizing with the devil in the groove and screeching guitar.

I had no inkling of this song being associated with the Alice in Wonderland story, but as I was looking around for footage to use for a video, I came across the 1971 public domain film “Curious Alice” and felt it would cut up nicely with the feel of the tune. The animated film was created by the National Institute of Mental Health, and is available in the holdings of the National Archives and Records Administration, if you’re concerned about such legalities.

LYRICS
O My Soul
Going going going going gone
O My Soul
Going going going going gone

I don’t know what you’ve been thinking
But you better watch your mouth
I don’t know what you’ve been thinking
But you better watch your mouth
Say it out loud, well
It might just come about

Where did you get those pink pajamas
You look like a bunny rabbit
Where did you get those pink pajamas
You look like a bunny rabbit…
Hippity hop baby
Find your carrot and then grab it

Everybody has a nightmare
And a wake-up call
Everybody has a nightmare
And a wake-up call
Are you sleeping
Or will you have a ball
