The magnificent here and now of life in the flesh is ours… and ours only for a time. ~ DH Lawrence
I knew, “it was a bad day for the ego, but a glorious day for me,” but the rest of the lyrics were nowhere to be found. So many bad ideas (“I fell in love at last with my stupidity,” “I took it off myself and had a cup of tea”… you get the idea), but I wanted to try to squeeze out another song for June in this 2026 Song-A-Month thing.
After my friend David died recently, I found myself going back into that dark place of introspection, that well that shows up in Haruki Murakami books where the protagonist examines his place in the wider picture of things. It became clear to me that our friendship had been a brief sparkly thing that existed for a short while and now was gone.
It developed then that we ourselves are sparks, brief sparks, in that infinite web of time and space, and if we can be as bright as we can, and then inspire the other sparks around us to be as bright as they can be, what a wonderful light show we’d get to experience while we’re here. Fireworks! So that helped pull me from the well and finish the song. Aren’t you glad you know that? 😄
LYRICS
It was a bad day for the ego,
But a glorious day for me.
I fell into a well like Murakami.
I couldn’t come closer
To being far away.
Does that imply somehow
My life is shadow play?
I am a spark,
A brief burst in the dark.
If we learn to shine,
Together – though It won’t last
Forever – what a beautiful light show
Our lives will be!
It was a bad day for the ego,
But a glorious day for me.
I fell into a well like my guy Haruki.
I couldn’t come closer
To being far away….
